SPURIOUS BANKNOTES.

OVER TWENTY RECOVERED.

SOME DETECTED AT RACES.

Between 20 and 25 counterfeit of Australasia £1 notes have been re* covered by the police since Christmas Eve. This number had been recovered! during the week-end. Up till midday to-day none othcr3 had been detected in the Auckland banks.

Three-spurious notes were detected at Ellerslie races, and one at the trots on Saturday, but in each case the person concerned was able to give a reasonably and satisfactory explanation of howf they were obtained. Another wgf passed on a suburban bus.
