LAND SETTLEMENT.
I notice in it recent "Star" that it was suggested by Mr. Holdsworth, chairman of the New Zealand Land Settlement League, to use the unemployment funds to • bring ' out retired Army and Navy men with pensions. At the same time we have hundreds of men in this country, and good men, too, who would be only too willing to go on the land'if the opportunity presented itself. Nine out of-ten of them would make good, as they understand farming in. this country. On the other hand, I doubt if twenty per cent of the men they propose to bring out would be a success. I would suggest that the money be used to put men on small farms with a carrying capacity of from ten to twelve cows. In my opinion, helping men on to the land who are already in the country is the only way to deal successfully with the unemployment in this country. A. C. STANBELL.
