PRICE OF WHEAT.
Who are free traders? I cannot see how we are going to have more employment by buying 8.000,000 bushels of wheat from other countries. That means a large sun of money to go out of the country each year. Can we afford «jt.| Our exchange is at present 5 per cent What would it be if we buy all our wheat and flour in other countries? Australia, Canada and the United States do not want to exchange goods with us. If wheat came in free the wheat farmer would put all his land in grass. He knows that he could not finance hi s crop. I saw in the "Star" a few nights back that the farmers in Australia owe £6,000,000 to the storekeepers. That shows that they are working at a loss. On November 21 wheat in Sydney was quoted at 2/6 i a bushel, ex truck, equal to 1/11* at country stations. bushels per acre this is £1 3/6. cannot plough, harrow, seed, sow/Toll, 6trip, winnow, bag, weigh and cart to station for that. ""H.W"." and "One ol the Unemployed" can put their own price on this work, then they will have some idea of the cost of putting in an acre of wheat and harvesting it. To grow wheat in Australia at a profit would oe about the same as in New Zealand.
