With an apparently utter disregard for the noise made, the thief or thieves smashed a thick plate glass window in the door. A'ga'ng of men were working on'the tramway lines in Queen Street, near the Arcade, all night long, and it is surmised that the intruders took adva'ntage of the noise made by the hydraulic drills. At one a.m. a barman employed at the Metropolitan Hotel heard a crashing of glass in the Arcade, and immediately informed the police. Coloured suitings were disregarded'by the thieves, who decamped with a bulky bolt of blue serge. There were no lights showing in the arcade at the time, but since tlje burglary tlie whole line of shops has been brightly illuminated by a powerful lamp in the middle of tht> arcade.
