IDLE STEAMERS.

UNION COMPANY'S FLEET. . QUESTION IN THE HOUSE. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The tying up of ma'iy of the Union Steam Ship Company's steamers owing to ; lack of trade -was the subject of an urgent question by Mr. C. Carr (Tirnaru) to the Minister "of Marine in the House to-day, the questioner being of opinion ithat if the Government could use New Zealand steamers for carriage of Ocean Island and Nauru phpsphates and for :the tranepoit of hardwood poles from Australia the 'situation might be relieved. Hewas officially informed that 950 mem'bers'ofthe Seamen's Union were out of employment. The Hon. J. B. Donald, Minister-of Marine, 1 replied that out of eleven.Union Comlpany steamers unemployed eight were colliers, which had to be tied up owing to the slackness in the coal trade. As for the suggestion that they might be used to carry phosphate rock, the arrangements, were in the hands of the Australian Government, and it was impossible "for the New. Zealand Government to give assistance in that direction. He would look into the question of using New Zealand tonnage for the transport of hardwood .poles.
