DANGEROUS BARBS.
FENCES IN COUNTIES.
RESTRICTIONS • WANTED.
Considering '. that much. of its area is residential, 'the Manukau'County Council is anxious to comply with the _ wishes of several ratepayers and prohibit the use of barbed wire fences fronting public roads, especially those roads that have footpaths beside them., There are legal difficulties to be overcome, however, before restrictions ■ in the matter can be imposed. Both municipalities and town boards have statutory authority to make a bylaw prohibiting the erection of a fence composed wholly or in part of barbed wire, but, according to the council's solicitors, there, is no such provision relating- to county councils. .{j -\ ; ; The opinion was expressed at to-day's meeting of the council that' permission, should be sought to restrict the use of barbed wire. It was eventually decided that a remit covering the subject, should be forwarded to the next conference of the Counties' Association. •
