"GERM THEORY EXPLODED."

An address urging the abolition of vivisection was delivered in the Lewis Eady Concert Hall last evening by Mr. M. Walker, under the auspices of the Auckland branch of the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection.

Good health was the right of every man, woman and child, the lecturer declared, but the medical profession would achieve nothing to help humanity as Icng as it opposed the workings of Nature. What were called by doctors "acute diseases" were really natural cures, which should not be checked by interference., The human body was such a highly complicated piece of mechanism that the introduction of foreign materials into it, and the removal of glands which merely appeared, but were not, useless,would always do more harm than good.

Nor would humanity ever att.-iin to universal good health'by the torture cf thousands of helpless animals in the caust of medical research, the lecturer claimed. Animals were not only shockingly mutilated, without anaesthetics, for the instruction of medical students, but they were infected with agonising diseases and loathsome tumours, which were deliberately cultivated in their bodies by the viviseetionists. From animals inoculated with diseases serums were extracted which were afterwards injected into human beings, in accordance with the long-exploded theory that diseases were caused by germs. No reasonable person would doubt the existence of micro-organisms, but these microbes were products of disease, rather than the cause of it. If there were toxins in the blood, the soil was there for the germs to fasten and thrive upon, and toxins could be caused by over-eating or by illdigested and fermenting food. Germs could not live in a pure, healthy bloodstream.
