THEFT FROM CITY FIRM. ADMITTED TO PROBATION. "His scheme was to sell, say, a hat for 35/, put in a docket for £1 and pocket the remainder," said Chief Detective Hammond at the Police Court this morning when Clifford Will Henley, a draper, aged 38, was cbarged with stealing sums of money amounting to £5 from a city firm. "He pleaded guilty last week," said Mr. L. K. Munro, who \ represented accused. Counsel said accused had had recent promotion in his calling, and had probably been tempted. He fell, but had made full restitution. He was a decent fellow and previously his-record for honesty had been unblemished. Chief Detective Hammond said accused had admitted taking £4 5/. Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.: Oh, it was spread over a period. Mr. Munro: Only a brief period, your Worship —three or four weeks. The magistrate asked the probation officer, Mr. W. J. Campbell, what he advised. The probation officer thought that a term on probation would be sufficient punishment. Mr. Munro: He has lost his occupation, and it is»a serious matter, because he is a married man. His chances of getting a job are few if a conviction is entered against -him. I ask your Worship to give him a chance. Mr. Hunt: Probation is not really sufneient punishment. However, I will put him on probation for twelve months. Mr. Munro: Would your Worship consider suppression, of his name? Mr. Hunt: Certainly not. He i s 38 and ought to know better
