NOT A MARRIED MAN.
.ADMISSION OF PERJURY.' ■ COMMITTED FOR SENTENCE. - (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. A statement made on oath during the hearing of a case against him in the Magistrate's Court, that he was married in October last, whereas in fact lie was not ••married, led to Edward Martin's being charged-with perjury to-day before Mr. E. Pa&e, S.M.
Harold John WortKington, clerk in the Magistrate's Court, said that during the hearing of a complaint for an affiliation and maintenance, order, Martin gave evidence on oath admitting the paternity of the child. With reference to his ability to pay maintenance, he stated that he was married in October last. He repeated this statement - under crossexamination.
.Sergeant W. Pender said that on August 8 ho ■ interviewed Martin, who said he was a ■ married man. When asked where the marriage took place, Martin said he was. not married, but had been living with a woman as man and wife since October, and he looked upon that as a marriage. Tha accused then made a statement admitting that the evidence he had given with respect to the statement that he was married was untrue.
After evidence had also been given by Sub-Inspectpr Lopdell, Martin, who pleaded guilty, was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
