MR. A. S. BOYD DEAD.
ARTIST AND -ILLUSTRATOR
A well-known Scottish artist and humorous illustrator* Mr. Alexander Stuart Boyd, died this morning nt his home in Rewhiti Avenue, Takapuna. He was a member of the Royal Scottish Water-colour Society, and was a noted artist, in landscape and genre subjects. He was also admirable in humorous drawing. His work first appeared in "Quiz." Mr. Boyd was for .many years a contributor to "Punch." He had also been 011 the staff of the "Graphic" and the "Daily Graphic." Amongst the works illustrated by Mr. Boyd were the following books: "Lowden Sabbath Morn" (Stevenson); "Days of Auld Lang Syne" and "Rabbi Saundersen" (MacLaren); "Gilian the Dreamer" and "Shoes of Fortune" (Munro); and "The Baillie of Glasgow." !A selection of these was (published in 1905, entitled "Glasgow Men and Women," Mr. Boyd also illustrated "Horace in Homespun" (Haleburton); "Our Stolen Summer," "A Versailles Ciiristmaetide," and "The Fortunate Isles" (Mrs. Boyd); "Wee McGregor" and "Jess and Co." (Bell); "Cottar's Saturday Night" (Burns"); "Hamewith" (Murray)., Mr. and Mrs. Boyd had a large number, of friends in English literary circles, including Sir James Barrie, Mr. W. W. Jacobs, and Mr. Pett Ridge, and their , home in St. John's Wood was a regular meeting place of writers and artists. Tliey also befriended Bret Harte in his last days.
The only son of Mr. Boyd was killed in. the Great War. Mr, and-- Mr»s. Boyd came to New Zealand ten years ago. Mrs. Boyd is a sister of the. late Mrs. John Burns.
