SOCIAL GATHERINGS.
There,was a large attendance at the weekly meeting of the Women's Progress Club on. Wednesday afternoon at the Higher Thought Temple, Wellington Street, when an address was given by Mrs. Grace- Silcock, followed by a social discussion and afternoon tea. *.*# ■ * ■ A morning; tea, was given yesterday at the Lyceum Club in honour of Miss Blackwell, of Kaiapoi, Canterbury, by her sister, Mrs. A. L. Caughey, Belmont Road, Mount Albert. The tables were delightfully decorated with golden Iceland poppies. Among the guests were:— Mesdames Page, Coppard, Masefield, W. Smeeton, S. Caughey, Hislop, Misses Ronaldson and K. Joughlin. * * * * The Hobsonvillc Progressive Club held a successful dance in the public hall on Saturday last, when there was a large attendance of local people and many visitors from surrounding districts. Monte Carlo waltzes were won by Mr. and Mrs. F. Williams and Mr. L. Nixon and Miss'L. Boyd respectively. * ' •' ■ * * # ; ' The Brownies of St. John's Methodist Church, Ponsonby, held their fourth birthday party in the schoolroom,.-which j was beautifully decorated with streamers; Olga Hansen sat in the middle of the room under a large Brownie totem, with a big Brown Owl on the top, and the Brownies had invited the Guiders, Girl Guides and Brownies of other companies. Parents were also present, and the company numbered close on 100
people. , A big chocolate owl, which had been part of the decoration on the birthday cake, was sent to a sick child in the hospital. 'Three little Brownies—Pat Staley, June Collins and Margaret Hansen—secured first-class badges. Six service stars were also presented to other Brownies. Afternoon tea' was provided by the-committee, and the party ended with-the playing of children's games. .■'. '«■'■ * - ■ ■;"* *
The winter fair organised by St. ; Mary's Homes'.Association to augment the funds will take place next Friday in the Town Hall concert chamber, and will be open from before noon to after five. Shoppers will thus be able to make their week-end purchases there and thus assist this good work. Luncheon will be available. The stalls will be: St. Mary's, Pamell, produce, in charge of Mre. .Cory Wright, Mrs. C. V. Houghton and Mrs. McFarland; St. Aidan's and All Saints', cakes, Mrs. Hawkes, Mrs. W. Averill and'Mi-e. K Pon:ford; Holy Sepulchre, St. Barnabas' and Devonport, work stall, in charge of Mrs. J. E. Draper, Mrs. Hay, Mrs. Robinson, Mrs. Hudson and Mis. Hunt. St. Andrew's, Epsom, one to five shilling stall, in charge of Mrs. Tutt and Miss Harrison. The country branches, assisted by Onehunga, will have a mixed stall, in charge of Mrs. Mac Murray, Mrs. Wigg and Mrs. Straw.' A novelty stall will be taken by Miss E. Brown. Cddments and flowers will be in charge of Mrs. and Miss Henderson, Jn the afternoon an orchestral programme will be arranged by Mrs. Roger Fenton.
A very delightful bridge party was given for her friends last evening at the Lyceum Club T)y Lady Lindo Ferguson, of Dunedin. Among the players were:— Mrs. W. H. Parkes, Lady Elliot, Mrs. Gillies, Mrs. Hodgkins, Mrs. George Bloomfield, Mrs. Colbeek, Lady Stringer, Mrs. Acton Adams, Mrs. Colebroune Hood and Mrs. Ewart.
The parents' club of the Onehunga free kindergarten held a social evening in the Coronation Hall, Queen Street, last Tuesday evening, when the hostesses were Mesdames Bissett, Lipscombe and Wliimster. A large number of parents spent an enjoyable evening.- Games were interspersed with items and competitions as follows Mrs. Kirkpatrick, elocutionary items; Mrs. Bissett, Scottish songs; and Mr. McSki'mming, humorous songs and sketches. The winners of the competitions were.Misses M. Park and N. Jones and Mr. H. Rowlands.
An enjoyable social evening arranged by the ladies' guild was held in the Avondale Presbyterian Church Hall on Thursday evening. The Rev. J. H. Combes, minister of the church, presided over a large attendance. A good programme was provided by the following: Mre. Whale, pianoforte solo; Mrs. Black, song; Mrs. Young, song;, Misa Wilson, recitation; Miss Molly Wilson, recitation; the Rev. J. H. Combes, song; Mr. McGregor, song. Accompaniments were played by Miss Houghton. During the evening several amusing games were indulged in. Supper brought a very successful evening to a close.
The Remuera branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union held the usual monthly meeting on Thursday afternoon in the Methodist Hall, when Mrs. Kasper presided. An address on "World's Peace" was given by Miss Lilian Edger, M.A., who, on conclusion, received applause for the very able and instructive way she had handled the subject. Pianoforte and vocal solos added to the enjoyment of the afternoon. Mention was made of the coming W.C.T.TJ. district convention to be held at Mount' Albert.
