SHIELD CHALLENGES

INTER-ISLAND TEAMS CHOSEN

CHRISTCHURCH, this day

At a meeting of the New Zealand Hockey Association last night, a letter was received from the Auckland Association regretting their Inability to secure a team to fulfil the shield match engagement with Canterbury, and forgoing the match. The Otago Association's challenges for the shield and for the Hatch Cup were referred to the Canterbury Association. The selectors for the inter-island match submitted the following teams, which were approved:— South Island.—H. Snooks, E. Dash (Canterbury), C. Gibbs (Nelson), V. Wells, B. Rogers (Canterbury), C. Jones (Buller), M. May (Otago), F. Fullwood, C. Burke (Canterbury), H. Whitwell, C. Mayston (Nelson). Reserves: Underbill, R. Best, It. D. Irwin,, O'Callaghan. North Island. —N. Hughes, (Wanganui), T. Ewan (Waikato), P. Spiers (Wellington), B. Massey (Wairarapa), A. Mahoney (captain), .J. Joblin (Wellington), B. Spiers (Waikato), G. Packer (Feilding), N. Robinson (Dannevirke), S. Betts (Taranaki). Reserves: T. Clarke (Auckland), W. Bannin (Wairarapa). Mr. A. Mahoney -was appointed manager of the North Island team, and Mr. P. N. Quartermain of the South Island side. Messrs. O. J. Mullins (Nelson) and C. Sara (Westport) were appointed referees for the match.

CARROLL SHIELD MATCH

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DANNEVIRKE, this day. The first ladies' hockey match of the season for the Lady Carroll Shield was played yesterday between Tamatea (Basting's), challengers, and Dannevlrke-Rua-hine, defenders. The latter were on top throughout, and won by 5 goals to 0, scoring three goals in the lirst, and two iu the second spell.
