OVERTIME PAY.
COUNCILLOR'S OBJECTION TO MEN'S EARNINGS.
COMPETENT WORKMEN ESSENTIAL
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
TAIHAPE, Monday.
Speaking with reference to a clause in the electric light committee's report at the monthly Borough Council meeting, Mr. G. F. Kelly said he had noted that the overtime pay of one of the Electrical Department's staff was in the vicinity of £80 for a period of 14 weeks, and another's approximated £00. He expressed surprise that one member had put in 110 hours' overtime in a fortnight, equivalent to eight extra hours a day. With unemployment rife among married men, he thought it too bad that single men should be enabled to obtain such opportunities.
The chairman of the committee, Mr. F. Read, explained that, due to the dry season experienced, the water power available was not sufficient to carry the load required, and the gas engine, had to bo requisitioned to assist. Only competent workmen could control the plant. The committee was empowered to deal with tho matter.
