MOUNT EDEN REFUSES SUPPORT
"The finance committee have considered this question and avo of the opinion that it should receive consideration as a private enterprise, said the Mayor of Mount Eden, Mr. E. H. Potter It the meeting of the Borough Council last ni ff ht, when a letter was received from the Auckland City Council stating that a meeting would- be held • on July 30 to consider the question of a commercial airport. ' ' Jfr. Potter said that private enterprise should be encouraged, and if the matter were taken up by the local authorities it would result in increased rates. Competition both in freight and passenger transport by air was desirable, and if the matter became a concern of the local bodies competition would be strangled. Mr. Taylor: Private enterprise could not dd it.
Mr. Potter: Oh yes they could
The Mayor made reference to the ■work being done by private enterprise in other countries.
"The local bodies should have a spell from industrial activity," said Mr. W. H. 'Nfigle. The council could not commit itself to further enterprise of a business character. Ho thought that the Government could help if necessary.
Messrs. Taylor and Cliappell were appointed : delegates to the meeting to state the council's opinion that the airport should be provided by private enterprise. ' r '
