ONEHUNGA STANDS OUT.
WATER SUPPLY SCHEME.
SATISFIED WITH OWN SOURCE
The proposed Provincial Water Board Bill came up for discussion at the meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council last night, when the council was asked to consent to being included in the bill which is to be re-presented during the present session of Parliament. Mr. F. W. Mountjoy, who had attended the recent conference of local bodies to discuss the bill, said he had been assured by Mr. E. H. Potter that Onehunga would not be rated it came into the scheme. Mr. Mountjoy said he did not wish to persuade the council to join the promoters of the bill.
Mr. W. C. Hill, who also attended the conference, considered that the whole thing looked too smooth. There did not appear to be a single knot in the string. The Water Board, if established, could not supply water to Onehunga as cheaply as its own source. The Mayor. Mr. E. Morton, remarked that Onehunga had spent much money in establishing its waterworks, and had an up-to-date plant, with an abundant water supply. The proposed Water Board would injure the City Council, which also had invested a large amount of capital in its water scheme. He did not think Onehunga should do anything to injure Auckland in this respect. Mr. J. Pilkington moved: "That in view of the adequate supply of water in the Onehunga springs, no further action lie taken with regard to the Water Board Bill." The resolution was supported by the other members and adopted.
