FAVOURITES DO WELL.
HOW .BACKERS FARED DURING . , SEASON. Tie Wellington writer "Overcheck," in a review of the eeason, says that there were 752 races during the year, and the table below gives the number of winners according to the order in which they were supported. The figures are a* follow, last year's totals being ehowii in parentheses:—■ ' •
The number of races run was greater this season than last, due to the fact that eoine special meetings were conducted in aid of the unemployed and earthquake relief funds. Anyone who totals up the two columns will find that they do not agree, but this is due to the fact that in several races dead heats resulted, and where it was for first place each fibrse has been credited with a win and there was no second position to allot' The return discloses that the first and third, favourite won more races than they did last season, but so far as first plac- : ings were concerned the second favourite dropped back, though ehowino- an increase in second placings. The new system of handicapping was possibly responsible for the slight increase in th* number oi: first favourites that won, but the figures generally disclose that it has not changed the position to any marked extent.
