TROTTING

WHEEL AND TRACK NOTES. DATES APPLIED FOR. (By ORION.) \u-ust 13, Iβ—N.Z. Metropolitan T.C. aSSXIJi , e-New Brighton T.C. October 4—Methven TC nptnher ]I—Waikato1 —Waikato T.u 8c ober 18-Ncw Brighton T.C October 25. 27-Greymoath T.C. The regular harness racing season in America was recently opened at Urban* Ohio A feature of the meeting was the su cesstf the driver, H. M. Parshal , who had 10 drives in the 12 races and won eight of them. The Austrian Derby, which was run at Vienna on May 11 in the presence of 17 000 spectators, was won by Alraune, who was a pronounced favourite. Alraune is owned by Mrs. Caroline Auer, who also owned last year's winner. Freichling. Jollv Chimes has been taken in hand a<min bv J. L. Clarke. The aged son of Four Chimes—Jolly Girl has had rather a poor run during the current season a second in his last outing being the only placed performance to his credit. Witn so many young and improving horses about the older brigade are finding it more difficult to secure*winning brackets. Dilworth has been placed in work after a good spell. Dilworth proved herself to be the best four-year-old of the season, one performance of hers standing out as a particularly brilliant effort. That was when she won the Courtenay Handicap at Addington in November. In that race she registered 4.26 after losing a lot of ground at the start, and it has been estimated that she must have run the two miles in round about 4.20. Seeing that tb6 two mile race record is 4.18 4-5, her performance was an extremely meritorious one.

Tamerlane is reported to be training on satisfactorily, but will probably not be produced until the Metropolitan meeting In November. During the current season Tamerlane has had rather a quiet time, having contested only four races, running first in one and second in another. In the Dominion Handicap at Addington in November he ran second to Western Voyage in 4.35, while on the third day of the cup meeting he won the Middleton Handicap from a 4.33 mark, but did not register time equal to his handicap. With Young Blake, Moneyspider and other fast trotters out of the game, races for square-gaited performers may not be so hard to win as they have been in the past. «

N"o thoughtful man will ever attempt making light of the value of inheritance (says an American -writer). And yet heredity, of itself, is aot sufficient. Psychologists have told us of environment and its" great influence. They call it the "twin brother to heredity." In the trotting horse industry we may apply the same terms with perfect assurance, for of what value' is a strong speed inheritance without proper growth and development? It is one thing to mate a choice mare with a choice stallion, securing in that manner a stoutly-bred foal, and quite another thing to grow the offspring properly, have its education carried out properly, and in due time pass the colt or filly' on to a high-class trainer and race driver. To be sure breeding, growth, development, and racing "go hand in hand." In the case of the trotting-bred foal they represent both heredity and environment. You cannot separate them and meet with success as a breeder.
