Semper Paratus had every show to win the Seatoun Handicap at Trentham yesterday, being one of the leaders when the straight was reached, but he then faded right out. Paleta went amiss recently, and could not be started on the first day of the Wellington meeting. He was given a run in the Members' Handicap yesterday, but was never prominent over the business end. Taboo, who is a good horse in soft ground, ran a creditable X'ace in the Parliamentary Handicap at Trentham yesterday. He was always one of the leaders till the straight, and finished close up behind the placed horses.

Luminary was-made a good favourite for the Highweight «at Trentham yesterday. Troilus and he carried on the running to the straight, where < Luminary compounded and finished absolutely last.

Hymestrason was very lame when he cooled down after winning the Hariri Hack Steeplechase at Trenthani yesterday. He slipped on landing over the sodwall, about a mile* from home, and that probably was responsible for the trouble. He is a great jumper, and quite outclassed the others in this respect; but if Corneroff had been ridden to a bit better advantage he would have caused him a lot more trouble, for he was going faster than the winner at the end. Make Up created a very favourable impression at Trentham yesterday by running second to Avro in the Corunna Hurdles. This was his first appearance over hurdles, and with the exception of one faulty jump he fenced well. Make Up was a good horse,on the flat, and he should do better in this department of the game with a little more experience. , He is by Surveyor, and is the first of that good horse's stock to race over hurdles. Mendip had his first race for some time when he contested the Whyte Memorial at Trentham on Tuesday, finishing third. He looked, an improved horse yesterday the result of that race, and after being well back in the early stages of the Parliamentary Handicap ran up third when half the journey had been covered. He joined issue with True Blood in the straight, and a great race saw him beaten by half a length. Mendip's turn, is not far off. Dunraven was a starter in the Trial Plate at Trentham yesterday. He looked well, and is developing into a very fine type of three-year-old. The brother to Limerick was never very prominent, and finished about seventh in a field of 21. His trainer, F. D. Jones, intends to take Limerick, Paquito and First Sight to Sydney on July 25, but he -has not made up his mind in regard to Dunraven and Craigavon. The last-named is to race 'it Trentham, to-morrow, and it will depend on how he shapes whether he w r ill form a member of the team. ,Eoss-shire has not had much racing, but he showed at Trentham yesterday that he was a very promising sort when he finished second to Coon Song in the Trial Plate. When the course proper was reached he put in a great run and was only a length behind Coon Song when the post was reached. He hung on well over the last couple of furlongs, and like all the Catmints, was suited by the soft going. Ross-shire is a very big two-year-old, and nest season should be more than useful. Staghunter was one of the best of the two-year-olds of his year, winning three races, including the Great Northern Foal Stakes. Last season, however, the best he could do was to finish third in the Royal Stakes at Ellerslie. Recently he has been going well on the tracks at Trentham, and was confidently expected to run well in the Stewards' Handicap on Tuesday, being about, twice as well supported as he was in. the Members' Handicap yesterday. He was prominent for a while on Tuesday, but then faded out. Yesterday he was always in the picture.and etayed on. to beat Havering by a very' narrow margin.

Snow Prince was soon in front when the field settled down in the Seatoun Handicap at Trentham yesterday, and was the leader into the straight, but Keesing was hard at him, and he stopped very quickly at' the finish. Blimp has run two good races at Trentham this week, and he should soon be on the winning list. He was always prominent in the Parliamentary Handicap yesterday, and finished a good fourth. Black Duke is a good horse, and he was never further away than fifth in the Parliamentary Handicap. He put in *a great finishing effort, but the big weight settled him, and the best he could do was to finish third. Diamond Queen (J. Burgess) was schooled over several pony hurdles at headquarters yesterday morning and gave a very encouraging display for a novice. This mare has built up in condition since the autumn and is looking well at present. The Sun has made two good showings at Trentham this week. In his last effort, the Highweight, yesterday, he looked to have a good chance at the turn, but found the distance (eleven furlongs) a bit beyond his compass at present. The Sun should do w-ell next season. Avro was unlucky in losing his rider in the Vittoria Hurdles on the first day at Trentham, for yesterday he won the Corunna Hurdles very easily. He went to the front five furlongs from home, and although Make Up attempted to head him off he had no show with Avro. Avro will not race to-morrow, both he and Consent having been sent back to Fordell.

Vandyke, who showed a lot of pace in his initial race at the Hawke's Bay meeting, when he was beaten into second place in ;he Trial Plate by Ganpat, was again p;/,duced for a similar event at Trentham yesterday. He was always well up and finished close behind the placed horses. He will do better next season. Mountain Guide was never very dangerous in the Corunna Hurdles at Trentham j'esterday. He fell at the last fence and lay so still that he looked as though he had broken his neck, but after an appreciable interval he got up and walked back to the birdcage to the astonishment of many on the stands. Deluge has only been put to hurdling this season, but he quickly made good, winning two events at Nelson and running second at Napier Park. Deluge was produced again at Trentham yesterday and ran quite a good race, being prominent all the way. The going did not seem to suit him, and he will do better on a firmer track. Town Major won juet as easily at Trentham yesterday as he did on the firet day. After lying handy to the leaders lie put in a great run on the rails, and galloped over everything at the finish. Town Major comes from a good family, for his dam, Barcarole, is by Martian from Grand Opera, and is therefore a sister to Cherubini and Rossini, both Derby winners. Havering was never sighted on the first day at Trentham, but yesterday in the Members' Handicap with H. Gray aboard, he hopped out smartly, and after being one of the leaders all the way was just beaten by Staghunter. Havering is about at his best now, and is worth following in future engagements. He should be hard to beat if he takes on the Winter Cup at Biccarton. True Blood got away slowly in the Parliamentary Handicap, and was one of tne last going out of the straight. However, he put in a great run on the outside and was in front five furlongs from home. He was strongly challenged by Mendip in the straight, but held him off .to win by half a length. True Blood would have taken a lot of beating in the Whyte Memorial Handicap on Tuesday if he had got away.
