TROTTING.

ASHBURTOf\i CLUB. THE WINTER MEETING. STAKES TO AR-ETHUSA. GREAT LOGAN WINS CHIEF EVENT. (By Telegraph.—-Special' to "Star.") . ' • ' CHRISTCHUECH, this day. The Ashburton Trotting Club's meeting was held on Saturday in fine but cold weather. "The attendance was not quite so large as usual, and the totalizator figures dropped to £18,426 compared with £22,791 last year. Gold Country, who' won the Trial Handicap, is y a three-year-old by Rey de Oro from the New Zealand Cup winner Country Belle. He is a quality looking young horse, and paces very attractively. It was his first start, and over the final furlong he raced very greenly, although his speed was always noticeable. Glenville, who.' was second to Gold Country 'in the Trial Handicap, is racing unluckily, as she seems to go just well enough to be beaten. She should make a high-grade pacer over two miles next season. i Will Reach Better Company. Merrijigs, the winner of the Longbeach Handicap, has-always shown speed, but in his darly races he was unsteady. He seems to be settling down, aifd he will reach better company. • Great .Logan, who won the Ashburton County Handicap by a narrow margin, has usually raced best over short courses. He is a powerfully built pacer endowed with plenty of speed, but in two-mile events previously ■ he had not shown much determination over the final quarter of a mile. He saw out the distance really well on this occasion, and had to show courage in the final effort, as he was being hard pressed by Pluto and The Shrew. Great Logan is--only five years old, so there is,a possibility of considerable improvement. Small But Good. Arcthusa, who won the Sapling Stakes, was bred by her owner, Mr. H. F. Nicoll, and is a sister to the well performed Wreckler by Wrack from Trix Pointer. She is-small, but she shows a good deal of quality, and she stays well. She paces somewhat low to the ground like Wracklcr, but goes fast without much apparent effort. Gold Chips, the runner-up in the Sapling Stakes, is on the small side, but is a smart filly. It was her first start in a racs and to go 3.25 4-5, and then get beaten, demonstrates how hard jt is sometimes to win. Red Shadow, the favourite for the Sapling Stakes, ■ was always well placed, but he collapsed two furlongs from home in a very disappointing fashion. No could be •offered for his failure. Gold worthy, the second fancy f or. the Sapling Stakes, went really well most of the way, but failed over the final furlong, just where it was expected she would shine. Superior Stamina. Whakataua owed his success in the Acton Handicap to superior stamina. He won at Addington earlier in the month, but ho looks' a better horse now. The Australian-bred trotter Home Voyage scored his first- success in the Dominion when he won the Stewards'' Handicap. He.trotted a fine race, going very steadily throughout. lin - his earlier races here he had not kept to his gait, and did not appear to like racing in a field. Trimmer, usually an unreliable horse in his races, was on his best behaviour in | the Winter Handicap, as he raced in great style, especially -over the final quarter of a mile. Country King paced a fine race to win i the Farewell Handicap. He had a good record in Southland, but after he came here he went off, and Tomkinson was in despair about his prospects. He has improved out of knowledge lately, and he may go on to top class.' He is booked for a trip to Auckland, and he may win I there. | Results ittrial HANDICAP of ISOsovs. . One mile and a hall'.
