WHEEL AND TRACK NOTES.

|{! SEASON'S FIXTURES. f (By ORION.) Alay 31, Jnne 3—Canterbury Park T.C. Hay 31, June 3—Hawke'a Bar T.C. Jnne 7— Ashburton T.C. '■'Friday week will be a busy day with. Mr. A. G. Mabee, secretary of the Auckland Trotting Club, as on that day nominations for the winter meeting close, also , entries of now yearlings for the 1931 - Great Northern Derby. i The chief event on each, day of the ( Forbury Park Trotting Club's meeting i for unemployment relief will be worth j £450, and will be for 4.34. class horses. J These races will be known as the. Awarua j and Birthday Handicaps respectively. I

There will he plenty of money foi Harold Logan when he steps out in the Ellesmere Handicap at Canterbury Park on Saturday. His form at Hawera was particularly good, and off the limit of a 4.40 class this week-end it is difficult to back one to beat him. A patron of R. B. Berry's stable has purchased a younger brother to Sunshower, by Sitngod—Wallace L. mare. So far the gelding has not shown the same early promise as Sunshower, but there are possibilities in him, and in such hands he will have every chance to prove t his worth. k I * Although beaten in the Selma Trot at t Ashburton -on Saturday, the two-year - ; old Red Shadow put up a fine race, and it was only by a neck that he suffered defeat. Red Shadow is one of J. Bryce's 1 -team, and is the present favourite for 1 the Sapling Stakes, to be decided next '• month. .„• i; _ Jewel Pointer, who is now being prejj pared by S. August, is being kept going, be on hand at the Auckland winter meeting. It is getting on for two years since the. son of Logan Pointer ~ 'won a: race, but he can still show a rare dash of speed, and is always a possibility over any distance. Handicapped on 4.25 in the Paparua Handicap on Saturday, the Aucklandowned Native Prince has been set a stiff task. Undoubtedly he is a brilliant horse, and is staying much better now than formerly, but even so he does not appeal this time as.a likely, winner. The son of .Native Xing has. now entered the select circle of New Zealand Cup eligibles.

Matters are ratfier quiet at- Epsom, there being only a handful of horses in training for the approaching winter meeting of the Auckland .Trotting; Club., The lengthening of the classes in many instances has kept a number of horses going, and no doubt the nominations when they close will show that there are plenty of horses about to provide substantial fields. > The two-year-old Checkers was expected to race well at Ashburton on Saturday, but the youngster failed to get in the money, and will not now have many friends for the Sapling Stakes next month. Checkers is by Worthy Bond from Fancy Pointer. Fancy .Pointer, by Logan Pointer from Fancy Girl, was bred by Mr. F. Holmes,'and subsequently was .purchased by Mr. J. M. Samson, of Dunedin. She was a speedy mare, and after finishing her racing career she was given by her owner to Mr. J. Bryce, who mated her with Matchlight. Later he sold the mare to Mr. A. McMillan, of Auckland, but some time afterwards Mr. McMillan repudiated the sale, stating that the mare was not in foal, and she was taken back by Mr. Bryce. Subsequently Fancy Pointer produced a foal •to Matchlight, hut she had not returned from Auckland, and Mr. Bryce then had her mated with Worthy-. Bond, who was doing stud duty in Auckland. Some time after service Mr. Bryce sold the iiare to Mr. Docherty, of Auckland, the owner of Etta Cole, who later disposed of her progeny, now known as" Checkers, to Mr. J. McMillan. ,

At the clearing sale of the late Mr. T. Ritchie's horses, held in Dunedin, Swiftbine, who is held on lease by Mr. A. Fergusson, was sold for £12. Swiftbine, who is by El Carbine from Swift, has a lot of speed, but is most erratic in his races.
