MEN FROM AUSTRALIA.
UNEMPLOYMENT PROBLEM. MINISTER APPREHENSIVE. large number op arrivals. (By Telegraph.—Pres3 Association.) WELLINGTON, Friday. The contention that the equivalent ia work should be given for any payments made to the unemployed was advanced by a deputation from the executive of the Municipal Association which waited on the Minister of Internal Affairs, Hon. P. A. de la Perrelle, to-day. Strong exception was taken by the deputation to the proposal of the Unemployment Committee to tax local bodies, and concern was expressed at the numbers o£ young men arriving from Australia in search of work. The Minister said all realised that the unemployment question was bristling with difficulties. The Government had used every endeavour to cope with it. He would convey the deputation's representations to the Minister of Labour, as he was sure they would be of some assistance to him. Unemployment seemed to be increasing, the Minister added. As soon as work was found for some, others came along to take their place. According to Mr. G. A. Troup, Mayor of Wellington, a great number of men were coming into New Zealand from Australia, men apparently who had only sufficient money to pay their fare across. "That is a very serious aspect," said the Minister. "I will bring it before the Government straight away. We have plenty of unemployed of our own. It is not fair that we should have to provide work for the unemployed from Australia." A member of the deputation suggested that there should be a closer scrutiny of the steamers leaving Australia, and that if necessary a quota system should be adopted.
