Gold Money did not jump away on either day at the Avondale meeting and completely spoiled her chances. The firsttime she does leaves the barrier properly she should take some heading off. Carl Idem is improving, and, he ran two good races at Avondale, finishing third on each occasion. This gelding showed a good dash of speed last season, winning a two-year-old race at the Pargaville meeting at Ellcrslie.

Branson made a good effort when the field turned for home in the Mount Eden Handicap at Avondale on Wednesday, being just on the outside of the leaders as they swung round the bend, but ho was tillable to go on with it and finished in the ruck, ■ ' Awarere won the Railway Handicap from end to end at Avondale on Saturday, but, with nearly 121b more to carry on-Wednesday, he found the task a little too much for him. Nevertheless, he was Avell in the picture all the way and finished a good third. Awamutu showed a lot of pace in the Mount Eden Handicap at Avondale ,on Wednesday. Gnce into , his stride, he was soon in front and was ..one of the first into the straight, eventually finishing jifth. In a little less pretentious company Awamutu will be hard to beat. Set Fair, who broke her neck at Avondale on Wednesday, was a two-year-old by Autumn from Blue Sea, and was, therefore, a full-sister to Ngawati. She was bred by Mr. D. J.' Barry, of Gisborne, who brought her up for the Avondale spring meeting, when she was disposed of. She showed some pace' in her previous outing, when she ran third to Hard Words and Bells of Shandon at Takapuna last February. She looked like turning out useful. I'm Alone was made favourite for the Mount lvoskill Handicap at Avondale on Wednesday, but the best he could do was to finish fourth. He'was in a handy position at the turn, Avhere the leaders swung out wide, and he made an effort on the rails, but he could make no impression on Avoncourt or Carl Idem; ana Grand Tea then' came through to beat the lot of them. I'm Alone has not done a great deal of racing, and he looks as though he will turn out a good stakeearner later on." >

Valley, who is owned by Mr. A. McDonald, and trained by J. T. Jamieson, lias had only a couple of races, but the son-of Valais and Bronacre knows how to gallop all right, as lie showed by his running in the Onslow Stakes at Ellerslie, when he Was one of the leaders' into the straight. That was his first effort. At Avondale on- Wednesday he was well up as they turned for home, but fell: ' If he has taken no harm from the mishap he should turn out a good sort next year. It is interesting to noto that his gra'ndam, C.riss Cross, was a sister to Alawa, winner of the V.R.G. Derby, and half-sister to Firecross, the crraudam of Artilleryman, and third dam of Valicare. Criss Cross is from Crossfire, winner of the A.J.C. Doncastcr Handicap as a two-year-old, and a sister to Arsenal, who won the Melbourne Cup. Therefore Valley has some great gallop•ids blood in liia veins.

Green Timber has only had a couple of races, but lie is likely to turn out a pretty useful sort when he settles down a bit. He is a bit barrier shy and was rather wayward when lined up for the Nursery Handicap at Avondale on Wednesday. However, when he did jump away, he showed that he can gallop ail right. ' Hoariri was saddled up for the Mount Eden Handicap at Avondale, but he was never dangerous, though he pulled up soundly. This is the first race he has had for a considerable time and he ran accordingly. Hoariri is a great mud lark, and if he could be got back to anything like his old form he would take some beating during the winter. He looks as though he may come back, too. Royal Doulton ran quite a good race till well into the straight in the Foley Memorial Handicap at Avondale on Saturday, but she then had had enough. On Wednesday she almost turned round when the field was dispatched in the Autumn Handicap and lost a lot of ground, but finished close up, fifth. With an even breakaway she would have been very troublesome. Karangapai was a starter in ths Nursery Handicap at Avondale on Wednesday, and ho was well up when the turn was reached, but Valley and Set Fair falling in front of him caused him to lose ground, and he finished fourth. With an uninterrupted run he would have been the hardest to beat. He lias been a most consistent two-yr.v-old and was very unlucky in his lar. ...ort. It was not till the last Whangarei meeting that Treasury proved successful over six furlongs, and he was tried over seven in the Waitakerei Handicap at Avondale on Wednesday. He was soon in front, and stayed there till well into the straight, where he commenced to stop, and "finished sixth. Ho has got a great burst of speed and perhaps with a little more experience he will see out seven furlongs all right.
