SURVEYOR IN TROUBLE.
ISSUED VALUELESS CHEQUES. MAN'S DESPERATE PLIGHT. Charged with obtaining from John Hook, £5, -n, April 19, and a similar sum two days later, by means of 'valueless cheques, Alfred Randolph Barton, aged 27, a surveyor, appeared at the Police Court this morning. Detective Sergeant Kelly obtained a remand until May 8. Mr. Alan who represented accused, s~.id Barton had committed other similar offences, the total sum involved bei™~ about £50. Yesterday he called at the police station and informed the detectives of the offences, as he was anxious to have them cleared up. He had been working ill the bush, and had his wife with him, but owing to her condition he had to leave the bush and come to the city. Barton had been promised a loan of £20 by a friend, but this money was not forthcoming. Being in a desperate state he took a few drinks and issued the cheques. At the request of Mr. Smyth, the magistrate allowed accused bail on his own recognisance.
