LAND SETTLEMENT.

CAMPAIGN PLANNED. FRUIT FROM POOR SOIL. A comprehensive programme for the education of the public in the need for greater settlement of the land was indicated to-day at a meeting of the New Zealand Land Settlement and Development League, when it was stated that a Dominion campaign would be opened next week at Wellington, with gatherings at Palmerston North and Wanganui to follow. As an instance of the productivity o"f second-rate land when scientifically treated, a consignment of apples grown near Te Puke was exhibited. The chairman, Mr. W. J. Holdsworth, said that the fruit was equal to anything the Dominion could produce.
