CLOSE SEASON.
MUSSELS AT WHANGAREI. MARINE DEPARTMENT ACTION. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") WELLINGTON, this day. The Marino Department has taken action by Order-in-Council to prohibit the taking of mussels within a large area of Whangarei Harbour/from the southern extremity of Busby Head to Marsdeu Point beach and up the harbour. It is stated that mussels were formerly very prolific there, but dredging by the Marine Department shows that they have almost disappeared. It is hoped that the close season will enable these beds to be replaced. This action indicates that mussels are becoming increasingly popular as food, and there is a project in hand for installing a dehydrating plant, enabling them to be utilised for food pastes and other preparations.
