OBSTETRICAL APPEAL

NEW LYNN. Tlie combined efforts of tlie ladies of New Lynn and Titirangi during tlie past month culminated, on Saturday afternoon last, in a successful garden party held at the residence of the Mayor ."of' New Lynn, Mr. C. F. Gardner. The Mayoress, Mrs. C. F. Gardner, officiated a» hostess to a satisfactory attendance. The function was favoured' with glorious weather, and after the opening ceremony, which . was performed iy the Mayor, the stalls and competitions did a brisk business, while the tearoom was well patronised. The sum realised was approximately £45, a satisfactory return for the zeal of the ladies concerned. It is expected that, before the appeal closes at the end of the month the,-district's objective of £50 will be attained. The following ladies officiated at the stalls and sideshows: Jumble stall, Mesdames Davidson, Jordan, Reiman, Jecks and Hitchcock; cakg stall, Mesdames Parry, James, Edgeley and Howson; sweet stall, Mesdames Lawson and Rankin; produce stall, Mesdames Andrews, Hatch, Barlow "and Piatt; competitions, Mesdames Brooke-Taylor and Cutler. The afternoon tearoom, for which v the ladies of Titirangi were responsible, was effectively conducted by Mesdames MacFarlane and W. A. Bishop. . . j

TAKAPUNA. An address was given last night at a public meeting in the Foresters' Hall, Takapuna, by Dr. Emma Buckley Turkington, organiser of the New Zealand obstetrical endowment appeal. The deputy-Mayor, Mr. J. W. Hayden, presided. Supplementary addresses were given by Dr. Alexandra Warnock, Dr. H. C. J. Wilkie, and Dr. Stuart Mackay. The four speakers made it very clear that each borough must do its share to finance this cause, the appeal being for £25,000, of which the Auckland province is expected to find £7500. As a practical beginning the following committee was set up: President, the Mayoress, Mrs. J. W.'Williamson; secretary and treasurer, Mrs. A. H. Wilkie; members of the committee, Mesdames Maw, Algie, A. Blomfield, Crosher, Bowden, Mackay, Bestic, Jones, Billett, G. Winstone, 0. Boak, and various leagues . and societies, including the Plunket Society (president, Mrs. E. J. Close), the Western Area Ratepayers and Residents' Society (president, Mrs. A. Blomfield), the Waitemata Women's Progressive League (which league, through its president', Dr. H. C. J. Wilkie, handed in £10 towards the appeal), and the Ex-Servicemen's League (president, Major A. H. Wilkie). A , vote of thanks proposed by Mr. Hayden was accorded to the speakers, and it was agreed to raise the largest amount possible in the short time available before the appeal closes.
