SYDNEY, this day.
It is reported that there has been a fair response to the owners' offer to man the mines. It is unofficially stated that between 200 and 300 Aberdare miners answered the call for labour at reduced wages.
These men were cavilled out of their positions three years ago and have been idle since. The owners are thus assured of a nucleus of experienced miners for reopening the pits.
An earlier message stated that the nature of the response to the colliery owners' call for miners to work the idle pits on the northern coal fields would not be known for a few days as tho applications must be made in writing.
Mr. D. J. Davies, secretary of the Miners' Federation, says he is convinced that few if any of the members of his organisation will break their undertaking to decline work except at prestoppage rates of pay.
Advices from Cessnock state that the situation is quiet on the coal fields. The men have made no response to the call to return to work and officials of the federation are quite confident that they will not do so.
