SOLAR SYSTEM.
Discovery Made by Arizona Observatory. LAEGER THAN THE EARTH. (Received 9.30 a.m.) CAMBRIDGE (Mass.), March 13. Professor Harlow Shapley, Director of Harvard Observatory, on Thursday announced that word had been received from Lowell • Observatory, at Flagstaff (Arizona) ox the discovery of a iiiiitli planet sokr system beyond Neptune, probably larger than the eaith and smaller than Uranius. The eighth and farthest known planet is Neptune, its distance from the sun being approximately 2,800,000,000 miles, or 30 times that of the earth. Owing to its great distance it is invisible to all but the largest telescopes. Its discovery in 1846 was regarded as . one of the greatest triumphs of mathematics. The diameter of Neptune is about 37,000 miles, and no less than 164 years is required for it to complete one revolution of its huge oibit around the sun.
