NEW FERRY STEAMER.

FOR INTER-ISLAND SERVICE. LARGER THAN THE WAHINE. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. Tenders are to be called by the Union Steam Ship Company for the building of a new steamer for the Wellington* Lyttelton service. The new ship will be larger than the Wahine, and will have a sea speed, loaded, of 201 knots. The normal running speed of the Wahine is 17 knots. Provision will be made for 1050 passengers. The plans suggest that the appointments, furnishings and interior decorations will be luxurious. There will be special suites and single rooms to meet the ever-growing and sometimes exacting demands of passengers. A feature of the accommodation will be the provision of a large number of single-berth and double-berth rooms, and a number of the latter will be- fitted with Pullman berths, convertible into one-berth rooms if required. Special provision has been made in planning the new steamer for the carriage and rapid handling of motor cars, and also for the quick dispatch of mails and cargo by the very latest loading and discharging equipment. The Wellington-Lyttelton ferry service is at present maintained by the Maori, built in 1907, and the Wahine, built in. 1913.
