LABOURER'S DEATH.
KILLED BY LORRY. INQUIRY INTO PONSONBY FATALITY. A verdict of accidental death was returned by the coroner, Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., yesterday afternoon at the inquest into the death of Thomas Irwin, labourer, of 160, Great North Road, who was run over by a motor lorry at the corner of Ponsonby Road and Hopetoun Street on February 20. The evidence showed that surfacing work was being carried on in Hopetoun Street, a portable tar boiler being across the end of the street. Deceased was about to cross the narrow space to the other side of the road, when the lorry came round the corner at a slow speed. Richard Potter, a fellow workman, said Irwin evidently saw the lorry coming, for he signalled to the driver to come on. He seemed to stumble, however, and fell between the front and back wheels of the vehicle. The driver of the lorry, Thomas Harold Gould, said he heard somebody shout "look out!" and the next thing he saw was that the man had fallen under the vehicle. . Mr. McKay appeared for the City Council, Mr. Northcroft for the owner of the truck and Mr. Glaister for the relatives.
