Matamata Meeting. I The Annual Fixture. King's Guard Takes Cup.— Unoca Scores in Tirau.—Valcuir Wins Hinuera. ;e 'r (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) ie MATAMATA, this day.' The annual meeting of the Matamata Racing Club was held to-day in fine p weather. There was a large attendance, t. and the course was in good order. The Opening Event. e Racing commenced with the Tirau 11 High-weight, for which Asmodeus was scratched. Page Boy ( £204), Otranto 51 ( £146) and Grand Arch ( £118) carried most money, while Unoco, the winner, had only £68 on his number. When the field settled down Otranto showed the e way along the back to St. Warrigal, Foxhound, Grand Arch, Lucess and Page Boy. Otranto was still in charge crossr ing the top from St. Warrigal, Lucess, 8 Grand Arch and Page Boy, the last--8 named being knocked back. Otranto was 1 first into the straight from Lucess, j Unoco and Grand Arch. Unoco then came J through to win by two lengths from c Always with Grand Arch a length and , a half away. Then came Otranto; Master Armour, Page Boy and Lucess. J. Favourite Beaten in Hinuera. ts The defections in the Hinuera Handi- ', cap were Valorient, Waiau Lady, Guid r Bay, Otranto, Beila, Erry Val and i Stonehenge. Welcome was favourite 1 and carried £415, with Valcuir (£387) t and Caulis (£272) next in request. When l they had settled down Dainty Manners 5 was showing the way to Welcome Boy, . but after going a furlong, Welcome Boy took charge from Ruby Dawn, Kanui and Day Guide, and they ran across the > top in that order. Welcome Boy led ■ into the straight from Ruby Dawn, ; Day Guide, Valcuir, Dainty -Manners and Caulis, 'but the two leaders tired • in the run to the post and Valcuir came i through to win by half a length from Caulis, who finished fast to get second ' money, with Wild Mint a neck away. I Welcome Boy was fourth, followed by Dainty Manners, Hinauta and Tempera- , ture. 1 A Close Finish. Tuku, Valstreet and Kanui dropped , out of the Waharoa Handicap, for which ; seven went to the post. When betting ceased, Parfait Amour ( £564), Archileen ( £387), and .Coll ( £288) were best 1 supported, and the lafet-named won by a narrow margin. Liona arid Flapperette began best, and led along the back from Parfait Amour, Coll, Abbess, Archileen, and Oscar, who stumbled, and was n parly down. Flapperette took charge crossing the top, with Abbess, Liona,. Parfait Amour, Archileen. and Coll handy, but Abbess was the leader entering the straight from Parfait Amour, Flapperette, Archileen and Coll. The last-named finished best, and got up to win by half a length from Abbess, with Parfait Amour a neck away. .Flapperette was fourth, then came. Archileen, Oscar and Liona. - The Cup. Luminary, 'Tuku, Spring Abbey and Red Day were not saddled up for the Matamata Hack Cup, and when the final figures were adjusted, King's Guard (£615), Motere (£589) and Unoco (£334) carried the bulk of the money. As they went past the post the first time the order was The Sun, Whakama, Grand Tea, Always and Unoco, with Motere 'last. Along the back The Sun and Whakama had charge, attended by Grand | Tea, Unoco, Star Comet, Day Lass and King's Guard, with Motere moving up. Unoco took the lead crossing the top, ; with Day Lass handy, then came Taumai, King's Guard and Grand Tea. They turned for home in that order, then King's Guard drew out and Always also came through, but the favourite held his advantage and won by a length from | Grand Tea, who beat Always by a neck. Thurnus was fourth, followed by Unoco, ; Motere and Star Comet. Valreina All the Way. Benighted, Derry Belle and Etchirangi failed to parade for the Putaruru Stakes, leaving the large field of 17 horses to face the starter. Glenisoa ( £730) was a warm favourite, next best backed being Valreina ( £218) and Rita Light ( £184). When they were let go Valreina began quickest and was never headed. Tradesman was her nearest attendant across the top, with Glenison, Rosebank and King Win next. Glenison moved up second as they turned foT home, with Tradesman handy, but in a hard finish Valorient got the verdict by a neck, with Tradesman a length further back. Lapaway was fourth, and then came Val Gene, Maunga King and Valoria. Red Day Lands Okoroire. Tuku, King's Guard,' A«modcus, Foxhound and Waiau Lady were the absentees from the Okoroire Handicap. Crown Arch ( £522) was first choice with backers, while Red Day (£491) and Oscar ( £401) also got good support. When the field raced out- of the straight Crown Arch was showing the way to Red Day, The Sun, Oecar, Lucess and JSTulIi Secundus. Red Day and Crown Arch were on terms along the back, with the i est of the field bunched. Red Day then went to the front and led across the top, attended by Crown Arch and • Oscar, with Nulli Secundus and Lucess next. There was no altei-ation as they . turned for home, and' Red Day won comfortably by two lengths from Oscar, who 1 beat Crown Arch by a length and a half. Lucess, Nulli Secundus and The Sun were next. 1 j 1 A Great Finish. The defections in the Railway Handi- 1 I cap were Tuku, King's Guard, Snow Prince, Whakama, Hinauta, Valorient and Wild Mint. In a fair betting race < Archieval ( £814), Master Latour ( £339) i and Vital ( £306) got most support. The winner, Abbess, carried £217, and paid i a good price. Master Latour began best 3 from White Ringlet and Glenison, then came Wako King, Archieval and Vital. < There was little change in the running I as they raced across the top. Master 1 Latour still had charge entering the straight, with White Ringlet, Glenison, Ruby Dawn, Vital and Archieval following. Master Latour and White Ring- , let were fighting out the finish when Abbess came on the outside and 7 got the verdict by a head from White Ringlet, who beat Master Latour by a neck. Glenison was fourth, then came d Joy Girl, Archieval, Wako King and & Vital. '(
