Furniture is fast disappearing from tlie modern small house and flat. Whereas the bedroom of not long ago contained, in addition to a cumbrous bedstead, wardrobe, dressing table, washstand, chests, tables and endless odds and ends, the up-to-date apartment exhibits rperely a fitted-in cupboard, fixed basin, a chest and mirror built in to the wall. Wardrobes, dressing tables and washstands have gone, while divans are used for beds. Plain oak is favoured for simple dining * room pieces, a settee, a few cosy chairs and a table appearing in the lounge. Loose covers are the vogue in plain materials of artificial' silk or cotton taffeta, and the furniture is easy to keep There°are no dust traps and no high polish, for maids are scarce. ... •
