PLUNKET SHIELD.

CANTERBURY V. WELLINGTON CANTERBURY OUT FOR 209. FIEST INNINGS CONTINUED. (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") WELLINGTON, this day. The playing conditions were ideal when the Plunket Shield match between Wellington and Canterbury was resumed. The ground was in splendid order after Sunday's rain and the bright sunshine" was tempered by a light northerly. In continuing Canterbury's, innings Talbot (20) took strike to BadcQck, bowling from the- southen end. The second ball was turned nicely to leg, where .misfielding by Lambert allowed the batemen to rim a couple. A smartly run single from a short hit by Talbot was the only other run off the over. McGirr was the other bowler and after Talbot had notched a single, Lester ran to double figures by turning the ball to leg. The batsmen were backing up smartly, and getting every run. Badcock's second over was a maiden, but Lester brought 150 up with a hit to leg off McGirr next over. He survived only another ball, however, as he. snicked a ball from McGirr to Mackenzie in the eiips. 150—6 —12. Powell was next in. Badcock wae credited vvith another maiden by Talbot, -but off successive balls from McGirr Powell scored two with a square cut and a four with snick that went rhrough the slips to the fence. Badcock continued to keep the batsmen quiet, sending down four maidens in succession, tut rune came freely off McGirr, several nice drives helping the score along. In Badcopk's fifth over of the morning Powell drove a ball through the covers to the fence, but just afterwards he was bowled. 167—7—11. Good Fielding. Talbot was joined by Merritt who opened his account with a single to leg oif Badcock, after which Hope relieved McGirr and was credited with a maiden over. Fine fielding by Dempster saved any runs from a hot shot by Talbot. Merritt, in facing Hope, was standing outside his crease, and he made a straight drive for three. The score was 172 when Lambert replaced Badcock, but neither batsman was troubled by the change. Talbot notched a' single and Merritt made a square cut;. for two, Dempster saving the boundary. A snick off Hope gave Talbot another boundary, and after that the scoring was mainly in singles, the batsmen ,beiiig; smart in running between the wickets. Talbot had made. 41 when he gave a hard chance in the slips off Hope. At 189 Badcock was brought on again in place of Lambert, but Hope was kept on at the northern end, and in the next - over Merritt cocked up a rising ball, and Hope, running forward, made the catch, falling on to the pitch in doing 50.... 195—8—10.-

Burns was next, and after his appearance Talbot made a splendid hit to-leg off Hope, the ball travelling to--tlio boundary. This effort gave Talbot his half-century and brought? 200 up. Canterbury's Innings had been in progress for 170 minutes. Talbot, who had batted well and made a splendid 6tand for his side, was dismissed shortly afterwards. He snicked a ball from Hope and the leather was turned by James into the slips where Mackenzie made a catch. Talbot's score included seven fours. 201—9—50. ' , .

The last man was Simmonds, and when he came in Burns opened out to the bowling. From a snick off Hope, Burns realised four runs. He made a few more and then returned a hot catch to the bowler (Badcock) who accepted it, the innings closing at 12.10 p.m. Canterbury's total was 209/ or only eight runs short of the number required to save the follow on, a course which, in, any case, was not likely to be followed by the Wellington captain. Wellington's Second Venture , . Wellingtons second innings was commenced ac 12.20 p.m. by JDempscer and Lowry, the opening uowiers being Lrouio and .bester. Scoring was (started by Ueinpster, who Hit a bail from-crqniu to leg for two. A stroke to/tno. on by i.owiy Jiad a similar result, out vuewj was only a single from crumbs next over ana nothing from two wiiieh. ioilowed. .Lowry, uowevor, registered two boundaries ai Leswr s expanse, Hitting a no uall hard to leg and 'forcing tlie next delivery square to tuo pickets. Lester's third over was a maiden, aud his next was a good one lor cameroury, as during it l;empster wab dismissed. Dempster had juac made a 'ueaiTmui stroKe in sending the leather'' turough the gully to the fence and he tnen appeared to be caugut ill two ..minds, with a result tliat he was bowled.. 23— I—7. James tilled the vacancy, and after Lowry- had added a single. ,tae newcomer turned a bail from Uruinb to l«g and it travelled to the boundary.. Tue score was taken to 32 when Merritt replaced Croinb, and this change waa uliective. James stepped out to the first delivery by the slow bowler and evidently just touched it, as an appeal for a catch in the slips'was upheld. 32—2 — i. Mackenzie and' Lowry were next associated, and carrie.d.the- score to 37 bcl-re luncheon adjournment. Scores :— WELLINGTON.
