CHEAPEST PARLIAMENT?
"NOTHING TO BE PROUD OF."
LABOUR MEMBER'S OPINION.
(By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) ' WELLINGTON, this day. Probably having in mind a coming event, Mr. E. J. Howard (Christchurch South) remarked in the House last night when the Legislative Department' 3 Estimates were under consideration, that the New Zealand Parliament is the lowest paid in the British Empire. That was nothing to be proud about, said Mr. Howard, and when New Zealand members met those from other Parliaments they found that their Legislature was lo6ked at from that point of view as "the cheapest run show in the British Dominions." Some of the States in Australia were -slightly lower, but most of them were only glorified municipal councils. The other Parliaments of the Empire had higher salaries, and their permanent officials were also better paid.
