SWIMMING.
AUCKLAND CENTRE'S RSFORT.
KECORD SEASON EXPECTED. Members of the Auckland Swimming Association will hold their annual meeting to-night. . , Last season was not a very successful one financially to many of the clubs, states the association's report. The cause of this falling off in revenue was attributed to the Summer Time Bill, and to the lack.of public patronage, chiefly through the great amount of unemployment in the city. During the season the centre conducted three carnivals, which were in every way successful. Two of these carnivals were devoted to the Auckland Centre championships, while the third was in connection with the visit of Arne Borg. After the unsatisfactory way in which the water polo competition was concluded it was decided to appoint a separate committee, called the Water Polo Control Board, to conduct all matters appertaining to water polo on behalf of the centre. This had been done, while rules, etc., had been forwarded on to the New Zealand Council for approval, and it was hoped that in future it would be possible to conduct the competition satisfactorily. , ._. The past season had been a huge success from the educational point of view and reflected great credit on the centre. No fewer than 5000 certificates were issued, while the previous best for any province for one season was 2623. It was a matter for regret that the Health Department had to close down the Shelly Beach and Parnell baths during the season owing to the bad state of the water. This had now been rectified by the City Council installing chlorinating plants at both baths. In view of the large number of certificates issued to children this season, and the increased population of the district, the time seemed opportune for approaching the City Council to provide more bathe where suitable sites such as the Western Springs and the old reservoir esist, while local bodies such as Onehunga, Otahuhu, Newmarket, Devonport and Mount Albert Borough Councils should be waited on by a deputation, from the centre, to provide facilities fdr-the teaching of swimming in their districts. < j Several new. records were made by Auckland swimmers during the season, namely, Miss End Stockley, 100 yds (lm ss), 100 metres (lm 11 4-os), -100 yds backstroke (lm 16 2-os), 100 metres (lm 24 2-ss) ; -Miss Peggy Robertson, 100 yds intermediate .girls (lm 5 3-ss) ; Miss Judith Webster. ,50yds junior girls' breaststroke (42 1-us) ; "&. Bridson 220 yds, (2m 295). i; The centre started the season with £160 &/10 in the bank and finished with £24S >6/9, showing a credit on the season of £79 3/11. , , x u The coming season promised to be a record one with a tour of New Zealand by •R Grier and N. Ryan, Australian champions, imported by the New Zealand Council, and local appearances by Misses Jean Cocks and Edna Davey, Australian lady champions, imported by the Mount JBden Swimming Cliib, as addfe.d attractions. ' the'te awamutu club. TB AWAMUTU, Wednesday. The Te Awamutu Swimming Club has fteen- allotted two New Zealand chiunpionships 'this season,: the men's quarter-mile and the ladies' 220 yards events. Tuesday, December 10, has' been confirmed for the visit of the two Australian champion's, Kyan and Greer, who'are to tour the Dominion ..this summer. ' ■"' >'•' . !
