ROWING IN N.Z.

PROMOTION OF "EIGHTS." CHAMPIONSHIP AT AUCKLAND ALL-BLACK UNIFORM ADOPTED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association last night, Mr. Maclaine (Marlborough), the chairman, in reference to the championship eights, said he did not think Corsair Bay, where tlie race was held last year, was suitable for such a race. Lack of finance was responsible for the fact that no overseas contests were to be held in the near future. In connection with the Olympic Games he considered there should be a select body of men to decide which sports should be represented. \

Mr. Styche (Otago) stressed the importance of eight-oar rowing, which he said was flourishing in Otago. Moreover, clubs in Otago were increasing their membership wherever the eights were. This season Otago would compete.

The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The championship regatta was allotted to Marlborough, the only applicant. Championship eights were allotted to Auckland by eight votes to six. Mr. Inncs (Auckland) remarked that there be at least three crews —Auckland, Wanganui and Otago. The officers elected were: —President, Mr., Maclaine; vice-presidents, Messrs. Mason (Auckland), and Wilson (Otago); council, Messrs. Paton, Innes, Lauchlan, Morris, Menzies, 'McLean and Turner; secretary and treasurer, Mr. Bayfield.

Alterations were made to the rules providing for four substitutes for eightoar crews, for black jerseys with silver ferns in place" of white jerseys with maroon facings for New Zealand crews, and the prohibition of the use of coxwains in championship pairs races. The meeting decided to donate an eight to the Southland Association, provided they find half the cost. A motion to provide an eight for country Auckland clubs on similar lines was lost. It was stated that when the council donated eights to loeal associations throughout New Zealand Southland was defunct, but had since been revived.
