NEW TRAM FARES

OPERATE AT EARLY DATE CONCESSIONS ON SUNDAYS. BOARD AND ITS DEFICIT. While no date lias jet ibeen fixed for the coming into operation of the newrates for concession tramway cards, it is probable that the change will take •place within a week or two. In a statement to-day the chairman of the Transport Board, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, 6aid that a definite date would be announced as soon as the new cards were ready, and the public might rest assured that concession cards already issued would be honoured on the tramcars. Mr. Allum corrected the impression conveyed in the report of yesterday's meeting of the board to the effect that concessions were not in future to be allowed on Sundays. A recommendation to that effect was made by the secretary in the course of a report which pointed out that concessions on Sundays were not allowed in other centres, but when the matter came before the board in committee it was decided to allow the Sunday concessions to continue. The new rates for cards of twelve trips, compared with those at present ill operation, are as follows: —

Concessions on the first five sections have undergone a reduction from 25 per cent to 124- per cent. The charge for the six-section card will remain at 5/6, and cards for school children and workers are not to undergo change. In future more than one passenger is to 'be allowed to travel on one concession card. Should one of the two passengers continue to ride a further section, he or she - must retain the concession card as evidence for the examining inspectors. Asked how the board hoped to make up the estimated deficit of £22,000 in the transport service for the current year, Mr. Allum said that in the remaining five months of the year it was hoped that additional revenue from concession cards and a saving in running expenses caused by reducing Sunday services would enable the board to avoid a loss on its undertakings. "Where traffic was very light, more particularly oi}. Sunday mornings," Mr. Allum said, "the service has been reduced on the-understanding that when warranted additional trips will be run to meet the demand."
