FIJI LETTER.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
SUVA, October 23,
Indian Legislators,
The first session of the Legislative i Council under the new Letters Patent, whereby the Indians have been allowed to elect their own members, opens on Friday. Already the Government is experiencing the natural inquisitiveness of the Eastern. One of the new Indian members has handed in no less than 120 questions, while the other two have some 70 or 80. If this continues we can imagine the Government Departmental officers going on strike. The questions are of the most searching kind, involving much investigation and figures, bo that the answering will occupy two clerks for a week or more to make up the replies. Exile Returning. Mr. A. G. Smyth, who was one of the Europeans (two years ago) deported from Samoa by Sir George Richardson, is going to New Zealand on a visit per Tofua. On his return he will go to Apia towards the end of December, when the. period of his exile is ended. Preparations for a great "welcome home" are being made in Apia and the day will be one of much rejoicing, as Mr. Smyth is very popular with all classes and one of the most conscientious and etraightforward men ever found in the group. He has established a splendid name during his stay in Suva. 4 Fiji's New Governor. The new Governor of Fiji is Sir Arthur Fletcher, who with his wife is arriving by the Aoraugi on Friday week. .Word has just come that lie will be accompanied by his aide-de-camp, Sir Wilfred | Graham Moon, a young lionet of 24 [.years and unmanird.
