LABOUR SPORTS.

ATHLETICS AND DANCING.

CROWDS FLOCK TO DOMAIN.

LABOUR M.P.'S PRESENT,

Short showers early this morning and unsettled weather until nearly mid-day made prospects for the Labour Day sports programme at the Domain anything hut bright. The forenoon was much the same as that of last year—a typical Labour Day morning—but nothing short of a downpour would have dampened the ardour of the younger competitors, who had been looking forward to October 28 for weeks past, planning to maKe it one of the days of the year, They were not disappointed, for later in the morning the weather cleared, and there was sunshine during the afternoon.

With the prospects of the afternoon not being marred by rain, thousands flocked to the Domain, and were treated to a first-class programme of athletic events. v Highland dancing which began in the morning added colour to the carnival.

There were good entries in all events, and competition was exceedingly keen. All the athletic clubs in Auckland were represented, and a number of new names appeared on the programme. With the season so young, the form displayed was unexpectedly good, and although the track was heavy many of the times registered in the running and cycling events were well up to standard. A number of Labour officials were present, and Mr. H. E. Holland, Leader of the Labour party, and Messrs. W. J. Jordan, M. J. Savage, W. E. Parry and H. G. R. Mason, M.P.'s, attended the gathering. Athletic events were organised by the Auckland Centre of the N.Z.A.A.A., and the Highland dancing by the Highland and National Dance Society. Results were:—^ HIGHLAND DANCING. Highland Fling, under 9.—Patricia Boyle 1, .T. Peters 2, June Morris 3.' Boys! Fling.—Willie Saul 1, Colin McLeod 2, Leslie Maslem 8. Novice Irish Sinton 1, Mavis Riley 2, Gladys Cain 3.
