INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS.
AN EMPLOYER'S EXPERIENCE.
(To the Editor.) We have heard a great deal about-unem. ployment for some long time, but a recent experience of my firm's may provide a reason why some of the girls and young women who are clamouring for work continue on the retired list. We needed a girl who is a coed writer to compile certain lists for us and to undertake a good deal of writing. The posi. tion was really well paid and the work simple and not at all arduous. We inserted -an advertisement requiring certain information including the applicant's age, this being most necessary so that we could appraise {he respon. sibility of. applicants. There were ninety-four answers, out of which thirty-seven neglected to give their names, so their letters were consigned to the waste basket, though amopMt them were likely Some of tie letters gave no particulars at all of the appli. cants, while in nine cases those ■ writine actually demanded to know the nature of the work, while two stated that they would give' particulars required in the advertisement when we informed them of the nature.of the work! We thought that rich. Needless to eay, those and others who refused to giveW. ticulars received no consideration. Surelylf a girl cannot give the particulars required*in the advertisement she cannot expect consideration, whilst as for those who demand informa. tion before they offer themselves—well/.they must be joking! This is by no means, an isolated case. A few weeks ago we advertised for a man to represent us and. required details of' experience. However, from the.sixty, odd who may have been qualified to assist us over twenty neglected to give any details of.-.their experience. Are these people so slow that they cannot grasp what is wanted?. I fear-that many of them must continue to remain unemployed if they do not wake up. and ,: fulfil»the elementary requirements of business. CIJ
