THE PROFESSIONALS.
BRILLIANT GOLF SHOWN.
MOSS AND DOUGLAS. (By Telegraph.—'Press Association.) WANGANUI, Tuesday. In the first round of the professional championship both Moss and Douglas played brilliant golf. Moss set off in the morning in great style and completed the round in 70, and finished 3 up on Rutter. In the afternoon Rutter won the second with a birdie 3, but Moss evened things up by winning the fifth with a like figure. He played a magnificent second into the . wind at the seventh to hole an eagle three. The next five holes were halved in par figures, but Rutter won the 13th and 14th with fours. However, he put a ball out of bounds at "French Pass," and Moss was dormy, and a half in four at the 16th gave him the match. A. J. Shaw is at the top of his form, as he Bhowed in his match with T. Galloway, who he had no difficulty in defeasing by 7—fl. In the afternoon he was going strong, and was 2 under fours when the match dnded. 0. C. Clements was 4 down at the turn in the morning round against M. E. Mcintosh, but coming home he produced good golf, and a 72 round gave him a margin of 1 up. The afternoon was a repetition of the morning. Clements lost the first 3 holes, but settling *down he finished in 71, and won by 2 up and 1. Not detracting from the merit of Clement's game, Mcintosh is capable of better golf than he displayed.
Douglass was brilfiant in his match against J. Clements. He rattled off a 70 in the morning, and continuing perfect golf in the afternoon he was unbeatable. Clements played a 75 round in the morning, but the pace set by Douglass was too severe for him.
The match between Moss and Rutter produced golf of a very high order, and so far was without doubt the match of the tournament. If Rutter remains in New Zealand he will occupy a higher position in subsequent contests.
