STABLE AND TRACK NOTES.

SEASON'S FIXTURES.

(By WHALEBONE.)

October 2—Birchwood Hunt October s—Napier Park K C October s—Kurow J.C. October 5, 7—Auckland B.C. October 10, 12—Dunedin J C October IT, 19—South Canterbury J.C. October 28— Waverley B.C. October 2S-Waikato Hunt Club. October 28— Waipawa County B.C.

The two good performances put up by Lady's Boy at Avondale are worth keeping in mind in view of this gelding's future engagements. He has been shaping quite satisfactorily in his training during tlfe past week or two, and with 7.11 on his back in the Short's Handicap, to be run at Ellerslie next Saturday, he has more than an outside chance.

The many friends of the well-known Tc Awamutu trainer, P. Loomb, will be pleased to hear that he has sufficiently recovered from his recent indisposition to be able to attend the Auckland spring meeting, and lie will arrive iu Auckland to-morrow.

Star Stranger has been going aton" the right way at Avondale, and this horse is bound to run a good race in the Mitcheison Cup on Saturday, despite his weight. Last season he had 9.12, but was among those left at the post and took no part in the race, while he has lib less in the forthcoming event. He is the most proved stayer in the race.

Alloy, who was recently sent up by Mr. G. M. Currie to J. Williamson to train at Ellerslie, is a half-brother to Grotesque, Glenross, Lady _ Desmond and Anklet. He started on six occasions last season without getting into the money and ran fourth at Avondale last Saturday week. He may do better this season, for he went very nicely in a gallop yesterday with Palmares and Bombarder.

Eoi de Val has been racing consistently this season, for in three starts he ha's won a five-furlong race and finished second in a six and a seven-furlong «vent. Leader ran 1.12 2-5 at Eiccarton when he beat Hoi de Val in the Longbeach Handicap at the Grand National meeting at Eiccarton in August. Eoi de Val has recently been brought up to join S. Reid's team for the Auckland spring meeting and he appears to be well forward for his engagements.

Merry Mint arrived yesterday to fulfil engagements at the Auckland' meeting. Towards the end of last season he showed every promise of returning to his three-year-old form, but went amiss again after competing at the Wellington winter meeting, where he ran a good fourth in the Whyte Handicap and the Winter Oats Handicap. He was a starter in the Flying Handicap at Hastings last Saturday, but was left at the post.

Reremoana and the two-year-old Isa arrived from the South this morning in charge of O. Cox.

The Takanini owner-trainer C. Morse reports that his brood mare Ngahere has produced a fine filly foal to Threadneedle.

The_Te Aroha horseman E. Keesing has been engaged to ride Singleton, Hunting Cry, Otairi and Lineage in .their engagements at Ellerslie next Saturday.

The local two-year-old Our Comet displayed a lot of speed over a couple of furlongs on the course proper during the week, and when ready to race he should prove a payable proposition.

Talisker and Vertigern, who arrived yesterday, were each given pace work on the No. 3 track at Ellerslie this morning, sprinting home the last few furlongs. W. D. Maroney has' both his charges looking exceptionally well.

The two-year-old filly Set Fair, by Autumn —Blue Sea, who was bred by Mr. D. J. Barry, and was brought to Auckland for the recent Avondale meeting, has been sold to a patron of W. Gough's stable at, Avondale.

Roundelay has been withdrawn from the Great Northern Guineas. It is stated that he bled slightly on pulling up after the Hawke's Bay Guineas, but this, no doubt was due to him slipping and falling down on his nose at the start.

Another good performance over the steeplechase fences at Ellerslie was registered by Lady Spalpeen on Tuesday morning. Racing over hurdles has kept the Spalpeen mare in good racing trim, and when she is asked to perform over steeplechase country she will not lack anything on the score of condition.

In a schooling task over four hurdles at headquarters yesterday morning, Sir Archie gave an improved showing. Providing he displays the same jumping ability the next time he races over hurdles the chestnut gelding should be in the money. He was running on at the finish of the Kingsland hurdles at Avondale, and as that was his first appearance over the battens, an early improvement can be expected.

In a trial ruu over the big fences at headquarters yesterday morning Sea Comet acquitted himself creditably, and his effort is likely to gain him good support in the Hunters' Steeplechase on Saturday next. A. Julian has given this horse a solid preparation, and he has stood up to it in good style, and has never been in better fettle than he is at the present time.

Recent track work points to Gay Cockade being on the improve, and he should do well around the country circuit this season. W. Hawkins has not hurried the Depredation gelding in his preparation, with the result that he has built up nice and solid, and now looks better than ever he has previously done. Gay Cockade is not engaged at Ellerslie next Saturday, but may race in the Hobeon Handicap, a seven-furlong event, run on the concluding day.

The Great Northern Guineas candidate Pink Coat was given a strong work-out over six furlongs on the outside of the course proper at Ellerslie yesterday morning, and got through his task in a pleasing manner. The Southern three-year-old has a very smooth style of galloping, and judging by his condition, will be capable of running out a solid mile journey next Saturday. A. E. Ellis has been engaged to ride Pink Coat in the Guineas, and the South Island galloper is sure to be one of the favoured division.

Should Perception fail in the Epsom, it is probable he will be taken to Melbourne for the Caulfield Cup, a race which may be more suitable for hiin, as he looks like staying at least a mile and a half. Recently the Psychology gelding was supported at long odds for the V.A.T.C. race, and he was coupled in doubles with Phar Lap for about £ 10,000. In the Cup Perception will carry 7.11, lib less than his Epsom impost. So far his attentions have been restricted mostly to high-weight races, and he has done well in them under F. J. Marsden's care.

Mashoor, who - won the Hunters' Steeplechase at the Auckland spring meeting twelve months ago and paid a substantial dividend, is engaged in that race again next Saturday. C. Morse brought the Lucullus gelding to Ellerslie yesterday morning in order to give him a school over the steeplechase course prior to the meeting. He was sent over the big fences, including the hill, and gave a most satisfactory display, negotiating the obstacles with plenty of confidence. ' Judging by his condition, Mashoor has done a solid preparation, and he looks better than he has done for a long time past.

Cylinder, who created a very favourable impression by his smart gallop at Avondale yesterday, is one of J. H. Jefferd's team. He was a starter in the Avondale Stakes last Saturday week, but failed to show up prominently. That was his first race, and evidently he has improved considerably in the meantime. Cylinder is by Limond from Cymene, an English-bred fare, who was imported to Xew Zealand by the late J. F. Buchanan, of Canterbury. Cymene is by Cylad from Hippocrene, by Spearmint. At the dispersal sale of the Kinloch Stud after the death of Mr. Buchanan Cymene w<is one of the brood mares submitted to auction. She had then a colt foal by Limond and was in foal to the same sire. Mr. A. B. Williams paid 2250gs for the mare and foal (who is now knoAvn as Cylinder).

Historic went well in his gallop with Star Stranger at Avondale yesterday, and in consequence he has come into increased favour for the Mitchelson Cup on Saturday. Last January at Wellington he showed ability up to one mile and three furlongs by finishing second to Ybma in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap. He put in a great ran at the end., while he also finished in most determined fashion in the Avondale Cup recently, indicating that he will see out a longer distance. Historic has 9.7, and this weight has yet to be carried to vie-, tory in the event. The Mitchelson Cup was first run in 191S, and till 1920 (inclusive) was a mile and a-quarter, but since that time has been a mile and a-half. Highland, who won in 1923, carried 9.3, Te Monanui, who scored in 1927 (for the second time) had 9.4, and Laughing Prince, who was successful last year, carried 8.10; and these are the best weight-carrying performances in connection with the race since the event has been a mile and a-half.
