STREET COLLECTIONS.

FAR TOO NUMEROUS.

LOCAL BODIES' CONFERENCE,

PROPOSED FOUR DAYS LIMIT.

The question of street collections was discussed at a conference of representatives of local bodies held last night at Onehunga. The Mayor of Onehunga (Mr. E. Morton) presided, and the following districts were represented, in addition to the members of tlie Onchun'ga Borough Council:— Mount Koskill, Messrs. l>. Sanft and S. Scarborough; One Tree Hill, Mr. W. G. Mulholland; Bidcenhead, Mr. P. McPhail (Mayor); Otahuhu, Mr. T. Clements (Mayor); Mount Albert, Mr. J. H. Langley (Deputy-Mayor); Devonport and Takapuna, Mr. F. G. IT. Ellisdon;' Newmarket, Mr. T. J. AVatts. The following resolution was adopted: "That this conference of representatives of the various local '■ bodies herein assembled for the-purpose of dealing with street collections, which, in the opinion of this meeting, are at the present time far too -numerous, and are becoming an imposition on the good nature of the willing section of the community, considers that four days only in the year should be set aside for this purpose." The'delegates will report to their local bodies with a view to getting this resolution confirmed. It-was also decided that of the four days for street collections one should be allocated to "Poppy Day" and one to St. John Ambulance. Applications are to be invited from, other organisations for permission to take up street-collections, and these will be considered by an executive which was set up last night, consisting of one representative of each local body, at a meeting to be held for that purpose at Onehunga a month' hence. The executive will then decide which other two parties shall be given the privilege of taking up a collection in the districts represented by the executive. All present at the meeting last night were entertained by the Mayor of Onehunga at the close of the conference.
