HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLE.
The Department of Agriculture hae received the following cablegram, dafced September 28, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London:— Tallow. —The epot .market is quiet, but steady. There was a fair demand at auction with lower grades a little weaker, present quotations are:—Mutton: Fine, 41/ to 41/6 per cwt; fair to good, 38/ to--40/6; dark to dull, 36/ to 37/. Beef: Sweet and/or mixed, 39/6 to 43/; fair to good, 36/9 to 39/6; dark to dull, 35/6 to 36/6. Mixed: Fair to good, 36/9 to 39/6; dark to dull, 35/6 to 36/6. Gut, etc.: 34/ to 36/6. Apples.—Large quantities ■ o_E English apples- are in tne market, the majority of poor quality, and are selling cheaply. Increasing arrivals of American ax-e meeting with fair demand. Prices are: —• American Gravenstein, 12/ to 13/ per ease: British Columbia Cox's Orange, 20/ to 27/; Novia Scotia Cox's Orange, 20/ to 27/6: Gravenstein, 16/ to 22/ per barrelEggt).—Supplies are decreasing and the market is firm for the best at higher p.rices. Krefient quotations are:—English, 20/ to-£6/ per long 100; Dutch, 16/3 to 19/; Danish and French, ]3/0 to 18/; Lithuanian. 11/ to 14/; Russian and Polish, 11/6 to 12/6. Hemp.—Manila: The market is depressed and weak under eelldng (pressure and poor support. Closing value for "J" grade October-December shipments is £36. Sisal: The market is quiet.' Tanganyika No. 1 is quoted by eeflere, SoptemberNovembe.r shipments, t'aii: average quality, £39; good marks, £40 a/. No. 2 meets with a little better inquiry on account of relative cheapness, compared with Mexican. Closing value**, good marks, £38 10/; fair average quality, £37 10/. Mexican is unchanged; good white, £40n2/6; special brush, £43 .12/6. New Zealand continues dull and buyers are holding back for nearer parity with Manila. Early this week there were buyers of -highpoints at £34 10/, but shippers held for £35. Buyers have since d-etired and the best bid now is £34. Other nominal comparative closing values are unchanged for September-November or October-Decem-ber ship men (a. Wool.—The sales continue with prices in favour of buyers.

PRICES AT SMiTHFIELD,
The Bank of New Zealand has received the following advice from its London office aa at the close of 'business last week: — Frozen Meat.—The wether market is short of supplies. The ewe market is firm, 'but there is little business doing. The lamb" market is steady, and no material change is expected yet. The beef market is more active owing to shorter supplies from the Argentine. Wethers, light to 6%d per lb; heavy, s&d to 6d; ewes, 4%d to 4%d; lambs, twos, 8d to 89id; eights, 7%d to B%d; fours, 7%d to 8d; seconds, 7%d to Bd. Ox hinds, SJAd5 J Ad to 5%d; fores, 3%' d to 4d. Cow hinds, 4%d to sd; fores, 3%d to 3%d<
DAIRY PRODUCE.
Messrs. Joseph Nathan and Co. have received the following cable from their London principals, Messrs. Nathan and Trengrouse, Tooley Street, dated September 30, as follows:— Butter. —New Zealand, finest, 183/ per cwt; first, 178/. Market firm, but quiet. Cheese.—New Zealand, white, 96/ per cwt; coloured, 95/. Market firm. The Bank of New Zealand has received the following /advice from its London office as at the close of business last week: — Butter.—Quiet, but steady, 182/ to 184/ per ewt- Cheese.—Quiet, but steady. White. 95/; coloured, 94/.
CHICAGO WHEAT VALUES.
(Australian and N.Z. Press Association;,) (Received 11 a.m.) CHICAGO, September 30. Wheat for delivery in September is quoted at Chicago at $1.28% per bushel. For December delivery the rate is $1.35%, for March'sl.42%, and for May 1.45%.
