TRADE BALANCES.
N.Z. AND CZECHOSLOVAKIA. According to the official data published by the Czechoslovak Statistical Bureau at Prague, the mutual trade balance between Czechoslovakia and New Zealnnd in 1924 was favourable- for Czechoslovakia by about £3670, and in 1926 by about £12,865. During 1925 and 1927, however, the trade balance was in favour of New Zealand, the credit account in favour of the Dominion being in 1925 £41,012, and in. 1927 £16,292. The New Zealand official statistics give a different view of the matter. Accord ing to these statistics the imports of goods of Czechoslovak manufacture amounted during 1926 to £86,823, during 1927 to £77,390, and during 1928 _to £104,017, while the exports from this country to Czechoslovakia were negligible, amounting to only a few pounds annually. This apparent discrepancy between pzechoslovak and New Zealand statistics can easily be explained by the fact that Czechoslovakia buys considerable quantities of New Zealand raw materials in London, Hamburg, Bremen, Antwerp, etc.
Th'e chief articles which Czechoslovakia was exporting into New Zealand were glassware, apparel, textiles, fancy goods, and jewellery, machinery, stationery, etc. The chief articles which Czechoslovakia is importing from New Zealand are wool (greasy and scoured), hides, butter and hemp. 1
Czechoslovakia was the greatest shoe exporter in the world in 1928, the United Kingdom ranging second and United States of America third.
