THE VEGETABLE GARDEN.

There is plenty of work to do, and with better weather conditions it is difficult to decide which job comes first. It is a good rule, however many jobs are waiting to be done, to finish one before starting another. Too often the mistake is made of starting a job before the last one is finished, with the result that many of our gardens are simply a collection of good intentions gone astray. Many seeds can be sown now. Parsnips, Beet, Turnip, Radish, Lettuce, Cabbage, Cauliflower. On light soils and in warm, sheltered gardens a sowing of French Beans can be made. These are tender, and a cold snap or heavy gale may spoil the plants; still, they are worth trying. Prepare the ground for" Runner Beans. This is one of the most valuable and useful crops that can be grown. Deep working of the soil and heavy manuring will ensure a great crop over a long period. Plantings of Potatoes can be made. The plants that are already growing should be sprayed. Earthing up should be done as soon as the tops are about nine inches high. The ground for Cucumbers, Marrows, Pumpkins, Watermelons, should be prepared. The plants can be raised in pots under glass, or sown outside; in the latter case some protection is necessary. The weeding and thinning of chops should be done as the seedlings are large enough to be plainly seen. Plantings of Jerusalem Artichokes can be made. These do well in "out of the way" . corners. Plantings of Cabbage, Cauliflower, Onions, Lettuce, can be made. A little nitrate of soda will be found very beneficial to "green" crops at this time of the year.
