THE WEEK'S WORK.
THE FLOWER GARDEN.
Most of the beds and borders should be gone over with the hoe. This is a good time to plant evergreens and some of the more tender shrubs. Azaleas, Rhododendrons, Lucullias, Poinsettias, Ericas, Gums, Acacias, Jacarandas, can be planted. Clematis can be planted now. When planting make the hole rather longer than deep, and put the plant on its side so that part of the stem is covered. Clematis need the roots to be kept cool by mulching and shading. Cuttings of Chrysanthemums should be potted off once they are rooted; to leave them in the cutting box is to starve them, and to grow good blooms they should be kept growing vigorously right from the start. Dahlia roots should be overhauled, and those not required for propagating can be planted out in borders. New varieties of Dahlias are such an advance on the older sorts that only the best should be grown, and second-class varieties discarded. Seeds of Asters, Petunias, Phlox, Marigolds, Zinnias, can be sown now. There is a large number of annuals available now for planting. The weather and soil conditions are perfect for planting purposes.
