HORRIBLE DILEMMA.
DIVER'S AWFUL PLIGHT. SAVED BY PRESENCE OF MIND. (From Our Own Correspondent.) SUVA, September 13. A Government diver named Fred Smith had a narrow call a day or two ago. He "was down, busy placing a large girder, 12ft by 10ft in, connection, with the new slip for the Public Works Department. He placed his hand under the girder to see if it was falling into its bed, when the girder slipped and fell, pinning his hand. The pain was intense. It was his left hand, and to reach the alarm cord he had to stretcn over his head. Any ordinary man would have fainted or at least become panicky, but Smith managed to reach the cord, and gave the signal to send down his slate. This Avas acomplished, and with difficulty he asked that someone be sent down with' a crowbar, telling briefly what had happened. A "boy" dived with the crowbar and was able to just prise the girder sufficiently high to allow the wounded hand to be withdrawn. Smith was at once assisted to the surface and rushed to the hospital, where it was found that, with care, his fingers could be saved. He is progressing towards recovery. He says, he had quite a close call.
