LANDLESS MAORIS.
KOHEROA BLOCK WANTED. PROTEST TO GOVERNMENT. The recent intimation by the Minister of Lands that he was not prepared to retain the Koheroa block, in the Waikato, for settlement by landless Maoris, was referred to at the meeting of the Akarana Association last evening, and considerable disappointment was expressed. The land was originally set aside for the occupation of native people whose lands had been confiscated after the Waikato War. It was stated that a large number of natives, descendants of those affected, were looking forward to being settled on this land when it was subdivided into suitable areas. The subdivision had been completed but instead of the land being open for Maori occupation it was being made available for public selection. It was one of the last of such areas set aside for the Maoris, all the rest having been disposed of in the same manner without consideration of Maori requirements.
A letter of protest will be sent to the Minister of Lands.
