MAORI TEXT-BOOKS.
WORK BY SIR APIRANA NGATA,
A busy man and member of the Cabinet as Minister of Native Affairs, Sir Apirana Ngata is a prodigious worker. Ho has just issued, under the authority of the Board of Maori Ethnological Research, his second volume of "Nga Moteatea," a well-bound book of 144 pages, printed in Maori. Like the first part, published 12 months ago, this edition of mementoes, carrying a subtitle meaning "the scattered fragments of the many canoes" (tribes) collected by the writer, is one of a series of textbooks intended for use in the study of Maori as a University subject. It contains a further detailed group of laments, genealogical tables, mythological incantations, historical prose, narratives and haka and poi dance songs, compiled with commentary on the compositions.
Sir Apirana intends to publish a third and larger book to complete a modern Maori literary compendium that should contribute much valuable information on an important subject.
